Hindu Succession Act, 1956
Governs Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. Major amendment in 2005 granted daughters equal coparcenary rights. Class I heirs inherit first.
Muslim Personal Law (Hanafi)
Based on the Quran and Sharia. Fixed shares (Fardh) go to sharers first; remainder to residuaries (Asaba). Sons receive twice daughters' share.
Indian Succession Act, 1925
Governs Christians, Parsis, Jews, and civil marriages. Spouse and children are primary heirs. Strict statutory shares with no distinction between sons and daughters.
Testamentary Succession (Will)
A valid registered Will overrides intestate succession for Hindus and Christians. Muslims can only bequeath up to one-third of estate by Will.
