Frequently Asked Questions on GST Calculations

What is the difference between GST Exclusive and GST Inclusive amounts? +
GST Exclusive refers to the price of a product or service before adding GST. In this case, the GST amount is calculated on the base price and added to it to determine the final cost. GST Inclusive refers to a total cost that already includes the GST component. In this case, the base price and the tax component are reverse-calculated from the total amount paid by the customer.
How is GST calculated when adding tax (GST Exclusive)? +
To calculate GST when adding tax, multiply the base amount by the GST rate divided by 100. For example, if the cost of services is ₹10,000 and the GST rate is 18%, the GST amount is ₹1,800 (10,000 × 0.18), and the total gross price is ₹11,800 (10,000 + 1,800).
How do I remove GST from an inclusive amount? +
To calculate the base price from a GST inclusive price, divide the total cost by (1 + (GST Rate / 100)). For example, if the inclusive price is ₹11,800 and the rate is 18%, the base value is ₹10,000 (11,800 ÷ 1.18). The GST tax component is computed as the total price minus the base value, which equals ₹1,800 (11,800 - 10,000).
What are CGST, SGST, and IGST, and when do they apply? +
For transactions taking place within a single state (Intra-state supply), GST is divided equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) or Union Territory GST (UTGST). For transactions taking place between two different states (Inter-state supply), a single Integrated GST (IGST) is levied, which is collected by the Central Government and distributed as per rules.
