Cyber Fraud Recovery Assistant

If you have been a victim of online financial cheating, identity theft, or bank/UPI fraud, follow this guided workflow immediately to lock down your accounts, preserve evidence, and claim legal recoveries.

Step 1: Call the 1930 Helpline (Golden Hour)

Critical Window
Reporting the fraud within the first 2 hours (the Golden Hour) gives law enforcement the highest chance of freezing the stolen money in the recipient's bank account before they withdraw it.
  • Dial 1930 immediately: This is the National Cyber Crime Helpline operated by the Ministry of Home Affairs. It connects directly to the citizen financial cyber fraud reporting system.
  • Keep details ready: The operator will ask for your bank/wallet name, transaction ID, account number of the sender and recipient, amount, date, and time.
  • The tracking system: The operator registers your complaint and checks the transaction path. They initiate a freeze request to the recipient bank/wallet to halt the funds.
  • Receive SMS confirmation: After registering your call, you will receive an SMS containing a temporary complaint ID and instructions to complete registration on the portal within 24 hours.

Step 2: File a Cybercrime Portal Complaint

  • Visit the official portal: Go to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Select Category: Click on "Report Other Cyber Crimes" and then select "Online Financial Fraud" or "Cyber Terrorism/Heist" as applicable.
  • Use Temporary ID: If you called 1930, register using the phone number you called from. Link the portal complaint with the temporary ID sent to you via SMS.
  • Fill accurate details: Upload details of the transaction, the suspicious phone numbers used, URLs of websites/apps, screenshots of chats, and bank statement showing the unauthorized debit.
  • Download Acknowledgment: Once submitted, download the PDF copy of the complaint registration. It is an essential document for bank claims.
Key Information Requested on the Portal:
  • Bank Account Number, UPI ID, or Wallet ID from which money was debited.
  • Recipient Account Number, UPI ID, or Wallet ID (if visible in transaction details).
  • Date and time of the transaction (must match bank records).
  • A detailed chronological summary of how the fraud happened.

Step 3: Report Fraud to Your Bank (RBI Rules)

RBI Zero-Liability Protection
Under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, if you report unauthorized transaction/fraud to your bank within 3 working days of the debit, your liability is zero. Reporting after 3 days but within 7 days limits your liability to a maximum of Rs. 10,000 (varies by account type).
  • Freeze Accounts Immediately: Call your bank's customer care or use their mobile banking app to block your credit card, debit card, UPI access, and internet banking to prevent further loss.
  • Submit Written Acknowledgment: Visit your bank branch in person or write to their official customer support email. Provide a copy of the cybercrime complaint acknowledgment PDF.
  • Obtain Token/Complaint Number: Ask the bank for a formal reference number/ticket number for your fraud notification. This protects your legal timeline.
  • Ask for reversal/recovery: Under RBI guidelines, the bank must credit the disputed amount to your account within 10 working days, pending investigation, if you notified them within 3 days.

Step 4: Evidence Checklist

Gather and check off the following items. These will be required when filing the cyber police complaint and submitting claims to your bank.

Official Bank Statement A copy of your bank statement showing the unauthorized debit, highlighted with the transaction reference/ref number.
SMS Notifications Screenshots of the debit alert SMS received from the bank, showing the timestamp and sender handle.
Chat Screenshots (WhatsApp/Telegram) Complete conversational history with the fraudster, showing phone numbers, profile names, group links, and instructions given.
Fraudulent URL Links Active links or domain names of websites, apps, or payment pages where you entered your banking details.
Call Logs Screenshots of call history containing incoming/outgoing phone calls from numbers used by the scammers.
